In Windows 2008 creating shares has changed a bit, making a share can be done via Share and Storage Management, this contains a few steps on how to create a share.
In this tutorial I will walk through all steps and will explain the options their are.
First we start up the Share and Storage Management, you can find it under the administrative tools.
You will get the following screen:
Klik on action and choose the option new share you will get the following screen:
In location you can manually fill in a directory or select one via browse from which you want to make a share. Besides this it is also possible to create a new directory and share it. In the detail screen you can see some nice things: is VSS enabled, is indexing enabled and is HA enabled. Click on next
The next step is to setup the NTFS permissions. We could choose to leave it default or could assign new permissions. When we did the setup we can click on the next button.
In this screen you can enable sharing via SMB or NFS or both. In this case the NFS service is not installed so we could not select it. In the field Share Name we give the name of the share that we want to create. Click on next to continue.
The next screen contains a new feature, Access-Bases Enumeration, in Windows 2003 this was an apart feature that was added after SP1. ABE makes it possible to hide directories and files for users who have no rights on them. Besides ABE you have the possibility to setup offline files and folders so that a user for example can’t make the share offline available. Besides the two settings mentioned you have the possibility to maximize the concurrent users that can connect to the share. When all settings are correct click on the advanced button:
The next step will be to setup SMB permissions. This will contain default permissions so it will not take much work to set them up. Of course you can adjust this options if you like
One of the final options is new, DFS Namespace Publishing, here you can publish your share in an existing DFS structure
As with all wizards in Windows 2008 you will get a short summary before creating the real share. Click on the create button to create the share as specified.
When everything goes OK you will receive the next screen that tells you that the share is created successfully:
